High above Altena on the Lenne River towers one of the most beautiful hilltop castles in Germany. The fortress, built from the 12th century onwards, was rebuilt between 1906 and 1915 according to an idealizing and romanticizing idea of the Middle Ages. Since then, it has housed the Museum of the County of Mark.
